Sculpted Rocking Chair – “The California Curve”

Black Walnut with High-Gloss Polyurethane Finish
Ebony Accents
48″ x 27.5″ x 46″

The sculpted rocking chair is a significant stylistic statement, and it offers a level of comfort that is unsurpassed. This particular chair was built from a single board and the individual components appear to flow seamlessly into one another. The shaping of the seat, legs, and headrest is done almost entirely by hand before the parts are sanded to a mirror-like surface. For comfort, the chair features moveable back splats that conform to the sitter’s body and adjust to ensure perfect comfort.

Paul first built the sculpted rocker as one component in his trilogy of pieces titled “Tribute to the Masters”. Celebrating the sculptural furniture work of Sam Maloof, the chair is a refinement of the construction methods and style he pioneered. The Tribute to the Masters series features designs based closely on the respective works of Sam Maloof, James Krenov, and George Nakashima, widely considered to be the three most significant figures in twentieth-century woodworking. Responding to the influence each master has had on his own work, Paul designed and produced a series of pieces that would honour the original style and also the direction in which it has pushed his own work.

The sculpted rocker is one of the signature pieces produced regularly by the studio. The chairs are available in size small through extra large, and can be built in walnut, cherry, or maple, or in combinations thereof. The rest rail is offered with “horns” as shown, or in a more subtle convex curve. Exotic hardwoods may be used for an additional charge and are dependent on availability. Price to reproduce in black walnut as shown, $3,850.
